The Passion That Is Model Railway Trains.

Why do so many people have a passion for all things connected with railways? Both young and old find enjoyment in operating and handling model railway trains. For the older person the interest might stem from their childhood memories; the smell of the steam engine as it thundered by, enveloping him in steam and smoke. The raw power of the locomotive as it hauled it's load over countless miles of track. Those evocative memories of events long passed remain forever imprinted in their minds and are brought to life again with an intensity by engaging in the most popular of hobbies - model railway trains.

The young person's interest, on the other hand, is often engendered by the enthusiasm displayed by the father, who more than likely was instrumental in buying the child's first train set in the first place.
What ever the reason the hobby is often continued throughout life and model railway train layouts have a habit of growing in size as extensions are added, year on year.
The enthusiast is well catered for in terms of the vast array of equipment available to him. All manner of tracking of various shapes, sizes and guaging can be layed out and spread over as wide an area as is available and of course to the limit that finances will allow.

As to the locomotive and rolling stock, the range is incredible. The engines whether they be steam, electric or diesel powered are amazing in their degree of detail, authenticity and refinement. A large scale range, from the very miniture right up to the almost lifesize, embracing all types and classes, from the earliest beginnings of steam locomotion right up to the present high speed trains can be purchased through model stores. Rolling stock is produced and painted in the livery of the many railroad companies that exist and existed worldwide.

Mention must also be made of the massive spectrum of ancilliary equipment designed to enhance the layout of the system and convert the whole to a virtual lifelike display. Back drops of mountains, forests, rivers and lakes, skies and city scenes all designed to enhance the sense of reality. Then there is range of electric/ electronic equipment required to give controllable power, lighting and sound effects to the setup.

It truly is amazing that the history of the worlds railways and equipment is replicated in this way and to this degree. It is no wonder then, that the business of model railway trains is a multi million dollar industry and that this hobby is so addictive to those who have become hooked.

Constructing Model Railway Trains Setup Made Easy.

If your total experience of model railways comprises of playing with a simple circular track, that you received as a present when a child, then be assured there is a lot more out there.
For a start, the variety of options available to stretch your skills to the limit are out available, waiting to be discovered.

It is necessary to commence with some bench work. You can either make your own foundation for the layout or buy one that is pre-built. There are certain benefits in building your own bench type foundation in that they are sturdier and designed to your own specifications. The base upon which the model railway layout will sit will be of sufficiently thick plywood supported on sturdy legs.

Of course, making your own has its advantages, allowing you to make the perfect layout that matches the one in your minds eye. It takes a little more time and effort, but it is worth it
The main objective is to attain a firm base that will not flex. You don't want your train scenery to collapse.
Take the time to consider your layout design and how it might develop in the future. This will help you decide what dimensions the base should be.

Of course there might be a restriction on what you would like to build and that would be the amount of space available to you. A small surface area need not restrict the build of an impressive railway system, there is always the option to go up in tiers?
There are so many scenarios that could be envisaged. The mountain scene, a marshalling yard or prehaps a railway track in the high mountains. Now is the time to decide.

As for the materials to use; paper mashe is very versatile material and can be simply made with almost zero cost considerations. This together with chicken mesh can form the contours of the build.
Much of the enjoyment of building a model railway is derived from designing the scenery.
In order to create a realistic representation of the real thing paint in areas that represent shaded and lighted areas.
The whole effect can be spoilt if the scales of individual items are out of sync one with the other.

Other considerations must be taken into account. Should the scale of figurines vary to give added depth to a scene? Some say yes, but how would that square with an engine and rolling stock moving from the back of your layout to the front? Relative to the locomotive, a man for example must remain to scale. To keep everything in proportion make sure to scale everything relative to the locomotive and rolling stock. By varying the scaling you can mess up the whole project.

Maybe you wish to create a city scene. No problem. Model buildings of different design and colors are available. Every scenario that you may envisage is achievable as there is so much kit available.

Let your imagination run wild and give vent to your creative genius; build yourself a model railway.
